Terry Riley

Back when I was an avid participator in the noise rock scene, I became to develop quite the fixation on the idea repetition. Not exactly the direction you expect to take when orchestrated dissonance is your intention, but through trying to come up with another sound to complement one i had just established, i was really attracted to the concept of progression and just building of a simple but constant framework.

This was inspired, honestly, by my lack of musical talent, but as time went on I began to discover that this idea wasn't foreign to the world of professional music. Especially not in classical music. The is an amazing minimalist scene that I was recently introduced to that is founded of that very principle of repetition that I was so enamored by a few years back.

I want to go over a few different composers that I have come to really appreciate recently, and I decided that i would start with Terry Riley.

Al Jarnow

I came across Al Jarnow by complete happenstance. While looking through DVDs at a local record store, I became curious with the cover for Celestial Navigations, a collection of all of his short films. I am really glad I decided to investigate further when i got home and ultimately order a copy. His work is a wonderfully pleasant feast for the eyes.

I am still reeling from the series finale of LOST. Six years, man, and now it's gone. The A.V. Club have I think the best write-up.
Now what am I supposed to do?

I am very much a child of this coastline, the left/west/best coast.
I have been taking a drive every weekend for the past month up to the Ragged Point area of the coastline. It's very calm and quiet out there. Lots of time to think. I have been listening to this particular mix on the way there every time, and it's done me so much good I thought I would share it...

Jason Matthew Vivona

I left my computer's power cord in San Francisco, so until John is kind enough to send it to me I am using my parent's computer, which apparently doesn't want to load any Vimeo videos. It's probably better that way. Limiting my media resources means I'll be quicker about getting off of here and, you know, doing more productive things like laundry or watching all of my Netflix movies so I can send them back. Anyway...

I always told myself that I would finish reading the book before I watched the movie. That was about three years ago. So I picked up a copy of the Criterion edition this weekend while in San Francisco, and now I'm telling myself "to hell with it". No point in having this turn into a Purple Rain scenario, where I never end up watching because of how much I've built it up for myself. Of course they are kind of different circumstances. With Purple Rain, I have invested emotionally into the soundtrack, and don't want that relationship tainted should the movie be something entirely different from what I imagined it. So really the comparison doesn't work. Nevermind.

I don't really need to be sold on the place that I plan on calling home within the next four months. I was sold when I visited there over four years ago, and I wasn't hardly there for more than a couple hours. It is, however, very reassuring that I keep finding more and more facets of the city's character that have me excited and my feet ever more increasingly antsy.

Via Ruins In Process, an archive of 1960s Vancouver art and counterculture. What an amazing resource. There's rich evidence here of what state-funded art can accomplish (and it's worth noting in this regard that arts funding in British Columbia will be cut by fully 90% in the next few years, even as the unconscionably expensive opening/closing ceremonies of the Olympics paid lip service to regional arts and culture). Page after page of mindblowing images from the various exhibitions, workshops, poetry readings, and mixed media happenings staged (mostly) by the Intermedia collective -- the hub of the Vancouver art community at the time. There are great photos and pamphlets from geodesic dome projects and improvised "motion study" live dance performances, as well as an excellent film section. I think my favorite is a short piece called "Know Place" -- although the title of another, "The Be In," perhaps best captures the mood. Also some great hippie concrete improvisations in the audio section. Very inspiring.

"American Gothic", alive and well, hiding in the shadows of bars in that big city by the bay. Can't get enough of this ghost folk sound...

Karpo Godina

Bought the new film edition of The Believer today and was treated to a DVD of rare short films by director/cinematographer Karpo Godina, a prominent figure in the 60's and 70's Yugoslavian "Black Wave" movement. You can read more about him and his films here and here. My favorite, "The Gratinated Brains of Pupilija Ferkeverk", lies below. Enjoy.

Hot Chip - I Feel Better

Hot Chip - I Feel Better

This has to be one the best videos I have ever seen. Every viewing I am laughing just as hard as the last time.

Liars

Been listening to the new Liars album, Sisterworld, all morning. Easily one of the best things I have heard so far this year. Going to see them in April, and I'm even more excited now.

How to Steal a Million

i'm sure the movie is good and fun in that classic way, but this trailer is just ridiculous. made in '66? you don't say.

Caribou - Odessa

reminds me a little of Peter Bjorn & John in a good way. the rest of the album is entirely their own, and i cant help putting it on repeat in the mornings.

I'm sorry. I can't help it. I am shamelessly riding this bandwagon to it's end.

The Blues Accordin' to Lightinin' Hopkins (1967) / Lightinin' Hopkins

I really want to track down the whole thing

I definitely have not had this dream, and that makes me a little sad.

I have definitely had this dream as well.

St. Patrick's Day

I am almost positive that this video represents the amount of knowledge about St. Patrick's day held by everyone I know who will be at the bars at 6 in the morning when they open next Wednesday. Did you know that he wasn't even Irish, and that it's not even a traditional Irish holiday but in fact one that manifested from Irish-American immigrants way back when trying to establish some sort of solidarity with each other? Did you? I sure didn't.

i've totally had this dream before.
